Get Hooked on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu: The Ultimate Full-Body Workout

While many people associate BJJ with highly competitive matches, it is also a proven form of exercise that will help get you in shape physically and has significant benefits with body flexibility and energy levels.

Because BJJ is a grappling art and incorporates martial art fundamentals and techniques with elements of wrestling and Judo, you are inherently forced to use your entire body during a BJJ session. As the ultimate full-body workout, BJJ will enhance and increase your cardio, strength, flexibility, stability, and energy levels.

Get Your Sweat On

A BJJ session is essentially the equivalent of a HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workout. Because BJJ is a full-body workout, it will get your heart rate up significantly and challenge all your muscle groups.

You can burn up to as many as 800 calories in an hour of BJJ. And because BJJ is aerobic (with air) and anaerobic activity (without air), it will increase your endurance and stamina over time.

Build Muscle Mass With Martial Arts

Rather than focusing on developing muscle mass and simply looking stronger, BJJ helps develop your body's true strength.

The acts of grappling and throwing involve not only leveraging your opponent's weight against them but also leveraging your own strength and grip power. Because BJJ requires full-body movements and techniques, you will inherently become stronger as you continue to use these muscles during each session.

Improve Flexibility and Stability

The form and technique you need for BJJ will challenge your body to move in ways and hold positions that you wouldn't typically do otherwise. For example, moves such as bridging and sprawling will push your hips to become more flexible. By challenging your body to move in ways outside of how we typically use our bodies in our daily life will inherently increase your body's flexibility by challenging these unused muscle groups by engaging and working them.

BJJ is all about creating a core center of gravity and using your opponent's weight against them. By learning how to center yourself and accurately use your weight (not leaning too far forward or backward), you will engage your core and increase your stability overall.

Energy, Endurance, and Endorphins!

When you get onto the mat, the practice of Jiu-Jitsu is extremely exhilarating and adrenaline-pumping. You'll notice an increase in your energy levels with each visit and as your stamina and endurance increase.

BJJ is exciting, so it's hard not to get a surge of energy with each session. And as you continue to train, rather than having peaks and lows, you will learn how to stabilize, retain, and exert energy as you need it.
