Brazilian Jiu Jitsu for Kids: Building Confidence & Discipline

Our team at Crucible truly enjoys the opportunity to teach Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) to children of all ages. Instilling the foundational and core teachings of BJJ to young children truly helps set them up for success in their personal and daily lives.

Many parents come to us with the goal of using BJJ to help teach their children self-defense and allow them to have fun while getting some exercise. However, BJJ develops so much more than physical strength and endurance. Kids learn how to feel confident not only in their self-defense skills but also in their own bodies. BJJ also instills discipline, allowing kids to learn how to focus and concentrate, emphasizing the rewards they see with patience and determination.

How BJJ Builds Confidence

In both kids and adults, BJJ is an excellent driver in building confidence and self-esteem. Kids become stronger, more agile, and develop self-defense skills which makes them feel much more empowered. Additionally, the steps involved in genuinely learning BJJ moves and techniques give kids several milestones to achieve. As they begin to perfect certain forms and movements, it gives them not only the motivation to keep going but also shows them how much they are truly capable of.

BJJ itself is centered on the concept that no matter how big or small you are, you can overcome your opponent by using their weight against them. This also helps instill confidence by showing kids that no matter their age or size, they can be just as tough and strong as anyone else.

How BJJ Builds Discipline

As with most other extracurricular activities, having kids develop a routine of attending their BJJ sessions and adhering to a schedule helps instill discipline. Jiu-Jitsu helps develop discipline even further through focused and persistent practice of fundamentals.

While Jiu-Jitsu may seem like it relies on athleticism and instinctual movements, all the moves require proper form and strategy. BJJ also requires a tremendous amount of focus. Not only are students focusing on their form but also their breathing, their balance and base, and the moves of their opponent. BJJ shows kids how they can reap the rewards of being studious.

At Crucible, we are more than happy to discuss all the benefits that BJJ can have on your kids and the skills they will develop in addition to self-defense. It's never too late or too early to start. We encourage children of all ages and sizes to join. Not only will they build up their self-esteem, but they will also be in a social environment that encourages learning from mistakes, valuing process over perfection, and enjoying learning something new.
